Web Information Systems

Wolf and Associates was one of the first firms to use web technologies to organize environmental information. Back in 1994, Wolf and Associates organized the Water On-line project which advanced how government in California would use the Internet to distribute and archive environmental information. While many of the goals of this project were beyond the capabilities of the technology available at the time, the Water On-line project served as a blueprint for what was to come.

Web technologies have evolved significantly, and now incredibly powerful and flexible open source operating systems, programming languages, on-line databases, web discussion "boards" and a whole lot more is available. These tools are available for free because, as open source software, they are in the public domain and available for anyone to use without purchasing a license. Wolf and Associates believes in and supports the use of open source software, especially for Internet applications. The software tools linked below are available for use with the GNU General Public License.

Wolf and Associates' business plan is to help clients use and customize these tools to design robust, sustainable, and cost-effective web solutions. We can provide software engineering, web and graphic design, digital document publishing, database and discussion forum development, strategic options facilitation, intern training and supervision, metadata field definition, research, and more.

Though we are especially looking for opportunities to work with clients who want to use the full range of these tools to create state-of-the-art Portal/Library websites, Wolf and Associates will help clients use any or all of the available tool. An exciting part of this work is the development of database driven websites that can grow over time to meet an ever expanding amount of information on the subject and archive all historic information. These sites can integrate metadata catalog entry and search tools for individuals, organizations, projects, research, photos, and other subjects into a "library" of different web folders organized into a "portal" of the subject or geographic area. Discussion forums that help document comments on environmental review and other public processes can be incorporated so that they save everyone resources and time. The websites that Wolf and Associates help clients develop can be long term assets that improve decision making and save a great deal of time and resources in the years to come.
